The Nationals have been scouting for a new manager ever since Frank Robinson was informed in September 2006 that he would not be returning as the manager in 2007. The Nationals are expected to announce their choice soon and Manny Acta, Mets third base coach, is keeping his fingers crossed hoping that he would be their choice.

There is no doubt that Manny Acta is one of the top candidates for this position. Acta has just returned from Japan where he was coaching the Major League All Stars. He informed that General Manager, Jim Bowden, had told him that he was still in contention for the position. Acta is also having an interview with the Oakland Athletics for a similar position.

Acta had his first interview with the Nationals in October 2006 and through an undisclosed source it was revealed that Acta had really impressed the Nationals' managements. He had meeting with Jim Bowden, Stan Kasten, the team president, Bob and Mike Rizzo the two assistant general managers. Acta later went on to meet the Lerner family.

Acta, who is only 37, is the most familiar with the Nationals. He only left the team two years ago in 2004 and many of the players are still there. He was the third base coach under Frank Robinson from 2002 to 2004. He has also worked with catcher Brian Schneider, second baseman Jose Vidro, Chad Cordero and pitching coach Randy St Claire.

Another possible manager candidate for Nationals is Tony Pena the first base coach for Yankees. However, he has not heard from Jim Bowden ever since the Yankees were eliminated from the American League Division Series by the Tigers.

There are other likely candidates for this position but Nationals are keeping silent about it. We should soon know who would get this coveted position.
